Something for Valentines Day

Something for Valentines Day

This is a little makeup brush that I made for Valentines Day.  The handle was turned from a piece of poly resin which was a gold swirl color for 2/3 of its length and the remaining 1/3 was clear with a porcelain rose embedded within.

A few things I learned along the way on this one .... first never use a gouge of any form, the material just 'shatters' on contact with a gouge be it a rough, finish or bowl ... just don't do it.   I found that my skew and round nose scrapper worked but you had to take small cuts.  Next although the end is clear it does not stay that long when you start to cut so keep alert of where the rose is, you don't want to cut down to it.

The finish was done with 200-400-600 wet sanding followed by the 3-step Beall buffing.

Steve,

Pretty clever, where did you find the brush? Great job!

Great job, but I didn't know that you wore makeup.   I've been wondering how the nut ale turned out.  Your backyard set up sure looks like a still to me, but most people would camouflage it instead of using such bright orange containers.

But of course, how do you think I maintain this youthful appearance ... beer for the inside and makeup for the outside  ;D

I've been delinquent on the nut-brown, it still needs to be put in the bottles so it can develop its carbonation and be consumed.   I like the idea of providing a little camouflage to the setup, guess I'll have to start shopping at Cabela's for my still equipment !

Steve, that's a nice looking shaving brush.

Last night, while waiting for the symphony (Ft. Worth) I visited the Barnes & Noble across the street.  That seem to be the only place I can find copies of the English magazine "Woodturning".  There on the front cover of the January 2009 copy was a picture of "PROJECT IN A DAY - How To Turn Your Own Shaving and Make-Up Brushes".

Where did you get your idea for your Make-Up Brush?  It's a beautiful project.

I got the idea, and the needed parts, from Arizona Silhouette

In the browse by category section there is a Bottle Stopper Blocks category.  In there there are lots of cool blocks like the rose, fly fishing, sea shells,  even army, navy, etc emblems.  In that list are the cosmetic brush heads, not exactly bottle stopper blocks but I guess they did not fit anywhere else.

Note that most of the blocks are for bottle stoppers, the ones for the cosmetic brushes are noted for use with the brush head.  The difference is that the cosmetic brush blocks have a larger/longer color section to accept (read hide) the brush head ferrule.

Steve, thanks for sharing the lint to Arizona Silhouette.  They have some interesting items.
